The foundation of Gaurav Srivastava’s business relationship: Trust but verify

Gaurav Srivastava took a stake in Niels Troost’s business with the express aim of diversifying the business away from Russian oil and into other geographies and commodities. Troost made a good impression, but Gaurav employed the age-old rule employed by Reagan in his dealings with the Soviet Union: Trust but verify.

And it’s a good thing he did, as an audit he ordered a year in to the partnership revealed financial irregularities, but alos that Niels Troost was still trading Russian oil - in violation of sanctions and above the price cap.
